évacuation by the garrison would hardly have entitl the standard-bearer to a Victoria Cross ; however may have otherwise distinguished himself, which e tailed post-mortem honours, perhaps by skinning al' the gallant Venetian commandant Bragadino, who skin, stuffed with straw, was taken in triumph to C d stantinople hanging at the yard-arm of the victorio general's ship. Quitting the mosque, we continued along the aquedu always upon the same sandy heights, which gradually i creased, until we arrived at a position about 200 yar' from a windmill. This formed a prominent object at t back of the large village of Varoschia, situated upo the slope beneath facing the sea, about a quarter Γ a mile distant. I selected the highest position f? a camp ; this was close to the aqueduct and abo' 600 yards 4 from the entrance of the fortress, counted the embrasures of six guns that could hav been brought to bear exactly upon our tent, but at tl same time I remarked that we commanded the low portion of the fortress, and could fire into the rear the batteries upon the sea-wall within the water-ga at a most destructive range. This position woul require a detached fort with a line of works along tH heights flanked by a small fort at the extremitj Three detached forts upon as many points which no' exist would render Famagousta impregnable, shoul the present works be repaired, and improved by slight modifications. I had been through the fortifications upon a form occasion, when I had the advantage of Captain Ingl the chief commissioner's guidance, but they are extensive and of such exceeding interest that ma days might be expended in a study of the details.
