* The king of England, who found he could not conquer Calais, but by famirib; ordered a large caftle to be conftru6ied of ftrorig timbers, in order to fhnt up the communication with the fea ; and he direfited it to be built afttf embattled M fuch a manner that it could not be deflroyed. ' He placed s it between thé town and the fern, and fortified it with all forts of warlike inftrumeirts, and garriforied it with forty men at arms and two hundred archers, who guarded the harbour and port of Calais fo elofely, that nothing could come out or go into the town, without being funk or taken.
