CHAP- CL**xVt tÊTÉ fctNO OT NAVARRE ÎECLARÈ$ WAR AGAINST FRANCE, *HE fRENCH KING BEING AT THE TIME A PRISONER tN ÉNGtANt). ^/"HEN thé kirtg of Navarr* was inarmed of the death of his great friend the provoft of the merchants; and of thofe who were attached to him, he upon the want of exa&neft in thé narration of FrobTart, I hope to be able to (hew, that the commonly-received narration is not the true text. I believe I have found thb text in three manuscripts in the king's library, two of which are perhaps the nioft ancient aod , authentic that exift in any library. One, numbered 8$ 18, bas à a date* which marks its age ; upon one of the leaves of vellum, at the beginning, is written : * This is a part of the chronicles done by matter Johit Froiflart, a Hainaulter* from the time 6f king Charles IV. of the wars between France and England : which chronicles matter William Boifratier, matter of requetts of thé king's palace, one of his counsellors, and counsellor alfo to the duke of Berry his lord, gave to tbeaforefaid duke his lord, in his hôtel de Neejle, the 8th day ôf November, in the year 1407.'-^Signed FLAM EL. * The manufcript cannot be later than this date : and one may fee by the figuature of W. Boifratier, which is on a leaf of parchment patted on the mlide of the cover, that he had been owner of it fome time before he prefeuted it to the duke of Btrrv ; To that it may, without difficulty, be eftimated as having been wrillen the latter end Of the 14th century. * The fecund manufcript is fo perfectly conformable to the firft in the quality of the velrum, the colour of the ink, and the form of the letters, that H dearly belongs to the fame period/ M* Dacier 40é
