A T this time, there were knîghts m Prance " gready hurt at feeing this war between thfc two kings carried on with increafing vigour ; and in particular, the lord de Coucy, who was much interefted in it, as indeed he ought to be, for hfe leld a very large eftate in England, as well in his own right as in that of his wife, who was daughter tf the king of England •$ which eftate it would be necefiary for him to renounce,. if he wifhed to ferve the king of France, whofe kinfman and country-man he was : he therefore thought it moft profits able to dilTemble between the two kings, and to travel to foreign 'pMrts. He very wifely took all his meafures ; and, having obtained leave of the Mag of France, he let out with few attendants, and Went to Sanfoy* • where he wte honourably re-ceived by the earl, barons *rid knights df fhitt country. When he had remained there as long as he judged proper, he departed, and, continuing his road, entered Lombardy, vifited the lords of Milan, the Lords Galeas and lord Barnabo Vifcontij when at firft he was made heartily welcome by them.
