CHAP.LXVIL . THE DUKE OF ANJOU TAKES THE TQWN ANQ, CASTLE OF ST.MAÇAJ^E Mf CAPITULATION,— THE TOWN OF DURAS BY STORM, BUT THE CASTLE RECEIVES QUARTER. 'T^HE; army of the duke of Anjou was daily • încrèafing from all quarters ; for fuch knights .and fquires as were delirous of renown came to wait on him, and to fervc him. The fiege was ^formed, before St. Macaire in a very haadfomc maoner* . for thofe men at arms had retreated thither who had quitted the garrifbns which had .fqrrcndered. ;The town, -therefore, had been gready reinforced, and better guarded; There were many grand afiàults and fkirmifhes, as well - before the town as at the barriers* Whîlft the fiege was going forward, the duke of Anjou and the conftable of France ordered the leaders of the diffèrent corps to make excurfions in -various parts. Large detachments, therefore, fet out, under the orders of the marfhal of France, fir Perceval de Marneil and fir William de Mon-contour. . Thefe -detachments remained for fix days in the field, took feveral towns and fmall caftles, and put all the fur rounding country under the fubjc&ion of the |pg of France. None went out to op-fiofe them, for the whole country was almoft empty •324
