CHAP. XV. THE KING OF ENGLAND DESTROYS EDINBURGH, ' AND GREAT PART OF SCOTLAND. THE ' FRENCH AND SCOTS DO THE SAME ON THE *" BORDERS AND IN NORTHUMBERLAND, IIMJHILE the admiral of France and thofe " • • with him, fuch as the count de Grand Pré, the lord de Sainte Croix, fir Geoffrj de Charny, fir William de Breune, fir James de Bo* enne, the lords de Peigny, de Hees, de Marnel, fir Valeran de Rayneval, the baron dTvry, the baron de Fontaines, the lord de Croy, sir Braque de Bracquemont, the lord de Lendury, amount-ing to a thoufand lances at leaft, of barons and knights of France, with the lords of Scotland and their army, were thus overrunning the northern parts of England, burning and deflroying the towns, houfes and country j the king of England, with his uncles, barons and knights, had entered Scotland, wafting the country as they advanced. The Englifh had quartered themfelves at Edin* burgh, where the king remained for five days. On their departure, every thing was completely burnt to the ground except the caftle, which was very ftrong and well guarded, During the refidence of king Richard at Edin-burgh, the Englifh overran the whole country in the neighbourhood, and did great mifchief* but they 08
