He advanced to Santaren, wbich is on the borders, and halted there two days. The garrifon and townfmen, alarmed at his numbers, opened their gates; and furrendered themfelves to him. Leyria was at-tached to the Spanifh intereft, for the town formed part of * queen Leonora's dower ; and, at the firft attack of the king of Caftile, it in-ftantly furrendered. • Having left there a ftrong body of men at arms, he advanced to Valeria d*Alcantara, and laid fiege to it.
