The duke of Brabant, however, was not negleftful in fending frequent meffages to king Philip of France by the Lord Lewis de Travehen, his fpecial counfellor, to excufe himfelf ; for which purpofe this knight had made many different journeys ; and ac Jail he was commanded to remain near the perfon of the king, in order to exculpate his mailer, and contradift any reports that might be circulated againft him.
