The men of Navarre feeing their provifions decreafe, and finding themfelves much weakened, without any hopes of affiftance from their king, who was at too great a diftance, furrendered the caftle, and were conduced to Cherbourg, carry* ing with them all their plunder. This caftle was razed to the ground, though k had toft large fums to creel; and the walls and towers of Pont au demcr were levelled with the ground. • 1 The French then advanced to befiege the fort-Tefs of Mortain*, where they remained fome time j but the garrifon, feeing* no appearancte of affiftance from the king of Navarre, and that the other Navarre fortreflès were too weak to rtftft the French, furrendered themfelves ,on the fame con-* 'dirions with thofe of Pont au demer.
