uras commanded, under pain of death, tha jvhoever had taken a prifoner Ihould inftantly kill him, and that neither noble, nor rich, nor Ample, fbould be exempted. Thofe barons, knights and fquires, who had been captured, were in a melancholy fituation, for entreaties yvould have been of no avail. They were feat-tere4 fbout difarmed in diffèrent parts, con-fidering themfelves in fafety, for their lives ajt leaft ; but it was not fo, which was a great pity. Each man killed his prifoner, and thofe who refufed, had him flain before their eyes ; for the Portuguese and Englifh, who had given this advice, faid,—c It was better to kill than to be killed j and if we do not put them to death they will liberate themfelves while we are fight-ing and then flay us, for no one ought to put confidence in his prifoner.* By this order there were killed the lord de Lingnach, fir Peter de Salbiere, the lords de Lefpre, de Béarn, des Bordes, fir Bertrand de Barege, the lord de Moriane, fir Raymond Donzack, fir John Afolege, fir Manaut de Saremen, fir Peter de Salibieres, fir Stephen de Valentin, fir Ray-mond de Couraffe, fir Peter de Haufane, with full three hundred fquires from Béarn. Of Frenchmen, there were fir John de * Rue, fir Geoffry Ricon, fir Geoffry de Partenay and many more. This was a very unfortunate event to the prifoners, as well as to the Portuguefe ; for fhey put to death, this Saturday, as many good prifoners as would have been worth to them, faking one with another, four hundred thoufand francs. 283
