There will be found, at the end of this Effay, an abridgement of the principal fafts related in the . courfe of the hiftory * ; and, in order to remedy, at leaft in part, the diforder which prevails in placing thefe events, I will difpofe of each in- the clafs to which it belongs, as well as point out the chapters which it will be proper to read, to follow the train of caufes of a fimilar nature, as well as the Irftory of the fame country, or the fame nation. It will be impoffible for me to go into a very minute detail. To leave nothing to be wiflied for, it would be right to make references to every article, of all the preceding paflages relative to it, and of all thofe which follow ; but this can only be executed as notes to the original itfelf, and would require all the attention of an editor who ihould intereft himfelf for the advantage of his readers. II. A more detailed Plan of Iròiffarfs Hifiory. TH E hiftory of Froiffart is divided into four books or volumes, as well in the manufcrtpts, as in all the printed editions. The firft begins with the coronation of Edward III. king of England, in 1326, and with the acceffion of Philip* de Valois'to thé crown of France in 13 28} and cloies'with the year 1379 inclufively. Froiffart begins his fécond volume with the three laft years of the preceding volume, and with more •Neither this, nor his Poems, are continued in the Memoirs de l'Académie, by M . de St. Palaye ; but a criticifm on - his poetry will be added frçm.an anomymous author in the Me* pioirs de i'Académie, vol, xir.
