other MSS. of which many even have been.writtcn in England, or deftined for that country fince the author is reprefented as offering his book to the King and Queen of England, it will not be eafy to perfuade the world that the fingle MS. of Breflaw contains alone fuch very confiderable differences. At leaft it*becomes prudent to fufpend our judg*. inent, until they ihajl have publiihed the MS. itfelf, or foipe of thofe paffages which are faid to have been retrenched. We cajinot too eagerly prefs the poffeffors of it to allow the public to participate of a freafure fo infinitely precious to the lovers of, hik tory. If, hitherto, we have been in error, we wii| cheerfully turn back ; and, there is not a man of letters poffefiing fenfe, who laying afide all national intereft, wouid hot ardently defire to have the Chronicles of Froiffart, fuch as they came from the bandii of the author. Many MSS. of Froiffart are to be found in the libraries of foreign countries. There is one in the library of the cathedral of Tour vnay, according to the report of feveral Flemilh librarians * ; three in England, according to the catalogue of MSS. in that kingdom, which alfo mentions fome manufcript notes colle&ed by Mr. Afhmole ; and others again, which may be feen in the new Catalogue of MSS. by Father Montfaucon. • M. de St. Palaye is ignorant how rich this country is in MSS . of FroifFart. There are many magnificent ones in the Bcitiih Mufeum, at Oxford, Cambridge, and in other public awl private libraries. I have in my library not lefs than fix ; hat not one is a complete hiitory.
