CHAP- IV.
A GREAT ASSEMBLY HOLDEN AT RHEIMS, BY • THE EMPEROR OF GERMANY AND KING OF FRANCE, ON THE SCHISM IN THE CHURCH, AND ON THE MEANS* OF UNITING THE TWO* PARTIES.
A T this period, there was a numerous affembly of great lords in the city of Rheims, as well from the empire of Germany as from France, whofe objed was to reftore union to the church. At the folicitation of the king of France, the em-peror had come thither in perfon, attended by his minifters ;, but becaufe they wifhed it not to be publicly known that this meeting was to confider of the rivalfhip of the two popes of Rome and of Avignon, they had it rumoured, that the lords of the empire came to Rheims to treat of a marriage between a fon of the marquis of Brandenbourg, brother to the emperQr, and a daughter of the duke of Orleans.
The king of France was lodged in the archbi-Jhop's palace, as were the dukes of Orleans, Berry, Burgundy, and count de Saint Pol, with other barons and prelates of France. When the em-peror was about to make his entry into Rheims, all thefe lords and prelates, with Charles king of of Navarre, went to meet him : after receiving
